How to Choose a Battery Assembly Line

Four decisions define the line. Answer them in order and the equipment list falls out of the answers.

1. Fix the cell format

Cylindrical, prismatic and pouch cells need different feeding, sorting and welding equipment. Cylindrical lines cover 18650 / 21700 / 26650 / 32650 / 32700 / 32140 / 4680; prismatic lines cover VDA PHEV2 and NMC aluminium-shell formats; pouch lines cover aluminium-laminate stacking and sealing.

2. Set the target output

Name the cells per hour you need at sorting, and the packs per shift you need at final assembly. Sorting throughput and welding speed are usually the binding constraints.

3. Choose the equipment combination

A typical line is sorting, paper pasting, welding, marking and polarity inspection, with laser welding added where aluminium or copper busbars are used.

4. Define the test regime

Decide what must be measured before a pack ships: cell grading and aging, module and PACK end-of-line tests, and BMS protection-board verification.
